Ready, Aim, Fire: Success! (LEH100)
This course begins where you are today: READY to begin your college career. Through intensive self-study and writing, you will take stock of the passions, skills, and interests that you have developed over the course of your life and experiences. Next, you will dream, brainstorm, and plan your future beyond college, identifying professions and/or industries that interest you, and AIMING at particular jobs and internships in companies, organizations, or institutions where you can imagine building your future. You will prepare a polished one-page resume and five cover letters, preparing a portfolio to build towards your professional future. You will also research majors and other programs at Lehman College that will set you on a clear, strong path towards your post-college future, planning out your major (and minor) requirements, semester by semester. Finally, we will discuss and compile a toolkit of study strategies and tactics for academic success at Lehman College. Through this course, you will you learn how to read, reflect, engage, discuss, write, and plan effectively, setting yourself up for success in college and in the future.
I challenge you to reflect on success, and to think about what success means – and how to attain it – in fresh, new ways. There are many, varied kinds of success just as there are many, varied ways of succeeding in life. If you imagine yourself at the end of your college studies, how will you know if you have succeeded? What steps will you take from now – the first day of the first semester – to ensure that you achieve the success that you desire? How will you take a successful college experience and move beyond, to build a successful career and adult life? This course offers you the chance to think deeply and creatively about what success means to you, and how you will build your own success, in college and beyond.
