Globalization, Technology, and Social Change (ANT330)
In this course, we will trace the connections among themes of globalization, technology, and social change. We will examine global flows of people as laborers and bodies, tourists and businesspeople; flows of information and communication, shaping intimate relationships, patterns of education, and access to power and influence; flows of commodities from sushi to ivory to oil. We will examine technology as a crucial component of these accelerating patterns of globalization. In this course, we explore exactly this intersection of forces that shape the contemporary world that we all experience.
In this course students develop skills of persuasion in both oral and written argumentation. This course is also designed to give you hands-on experience designing independent social science research, providing a bridge to 400-level courses, especially the independent study course, ANT489. In this class students utilize databases to search for relevant journal articles and other secondary sources. Each student designs and executes an individual research project on a topic related to kinship and family, and will undertake original field research to provide the basis for a final paper. By honing individual research skills, students develop a strong foundation for future social science research.
